Beach, Boogie Boards and Oh…the FL State ‘B’ Championships by Santa Pants
What an amazing season for the little Sharks of Deerfield Beach FL. First the punchline. The Sharks earned a hard fought 2nd place title in the USSSA ‘B’ state tournament losing the last game of the tournament 4-3 to the hard-hitting Orlando Aftershock. In 2010 tournament play, the Sharks earned a 38 win, 13 loss record (0.745) with only 4 losses to ‘B’ teams. They scored on average 5.8 runs and allowed 2.6. With three ‘B’ tournament first place titles, a 2nd place in an ‘Open’ tournament, and 2nd place in the ‘B’ states, the little Sharks should be congratulated for the crazy-a$$ hard work they’ve put into this game. The USSSA ‘B’ states is the last ‘B’ tournament for the Sharks and they will now participate in ‘A’ or Open tournaments.
Highlights of the tournament
- The waves at Vero Beach were awesome for boogie boarding. The Sharks (well most of them) could boogie board like professionals. Though Munchie was swallowed up by a wave and would rather stick a fork in her eye rather than attempt to battle the ocean. Jordyn lost at least 2 goggles while swimming; and all the coaches let off some steam body surfing.
- The Sharks were always competitive with every team they’ve played in the ‘B’ states; in actuality, they have been in every game this year! That’s a testament to the great defense and pitching of the team.
- Against two of the best teams in Florida, the Sharks pulled off wins against Coral Springs Panthers and Diamond Dusters. I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of the Dusters in ‘A’ play in the new year of play.
- Driving 20 miles away from one park to another (because of rain) only to have it rain on us again. A four hour rain delay. You know what it’s like to sit in wet shorts all day?
- Sitting in the back of the Suburban hatch for 3 hours drinking fruit punch while the kids watch movies in the other cars.
- Coach Sam treated everyone to 10 large pizzas 15 minutes before we played; we ate and drank under the tent waiting for the rain to stop.
- The mud being drained from the field with beer cups. High tech they are over at USSSA.
- Watching 10 year olds field a ball at 10pm in the pouring rain. Isn’t that bedtime for the adults?
- Devin (Nova Southeastern’s pitcher) came out as the pitching coach Saturday and Sunday. Sometimes the little Sharks respond better to a real-life softball player. Her help was invaluable.
- The parents of the little Sharks have managed to not kill each other this year. Overall, we have a group of drama-free parents.
Surprises of the tournament
- The Lady Gators White team made it to the top 4 of the tournament (congrats!). And you’ve got a great shortstop/catcher (the redhead). Send her our way;)
- The Diamond Dusters loss to the Firestix (can’t take any team lightly my friends) in elimination play only to battle back with consecutive wins to meet the Sharks (again). The Sharks and the Dusters are always fun to watch and nail biters.
- Coral Springs early exit from the tournament; most would have predicted they make the top 4 or 5 teams with the Aftershock, Miami Wildcats, Dusters and Sharks.
- Holy big bats Batman, the Orlando Aftershock are the best hitting and throwing team the Sharks have ever faced. We are looking forward to a re-match.
Individual Shark Highlights
- Gianna – Throwing out Orlando aftershock girl at 2nd and a great catch in CF. Confusing the opponents with the nickname ‘Blondie’.
- Amy- Fielding a low grounder in championship game that was almost but not quite a catch, thinking for a couple seconds, then throwing to 1st to still make the out. Did not fall in mud this weekend which is something very new to Amy.
- Mia- Another Chinese acrobat catch or two at second base and amazing vocals on her chipmunk song.
- Rosemary – Excellent defense at 3rd base and an MMA tag put on a baserunner from Chobee trying to make it to third.
- Brookie – lightning fast bunt coverage from the catcher position and improved pitch calling. She would win the ‘Dirtiest Catcher Award’ this weekend for all the mud stuck to her shin guard and cleats.
- Emily – 2 incredible catches in center field as well as solid play at first base (which includes keeping a rolling ball inside her glove)
- Brandi – Pitched a lot and pitched well and really began dragging that back leg near the end of the weekend!
- Jojo- Huge double into left field against Chobee and great baserunning, avoiding a tag by the SS while running to 3rd (even though she was called out, we know she wasn’t.)
- Gigi – Stepped in and did her job by advancing runners and getting on base in the championship game. Winning most of the coin flips as well:-)
- Taco - Did well at the plate and kept talking in the field to keep everyone upbeat this weekend. Does not catch a football well while diving into the pool.
- Tiffany- Solid hits this weekend and a great play from left field to 3rd for an out. One of the only girls that did not cry this weekend.
